His approach to surgery is defined by technical precision, patient-centred care, and a commitment to ensuring the best possible surgical outcomes. Dr Chilton’s passion for medicine was sparked during his final year of high school when he had the opportunity to observe surgery in theatre. Although he briefly considered engineering, his fascination with the surgical field led him to pursue medicine.
His medical journey began at the University of Pretoria, where he completed his MBChB in 2009. He went on to complete his internship at Pietermaritzburg Hospital Complex and community service at Vredenburg Hospital. His early career saw him working across various hospitals in the Cape Town Metropole, gaining invaluable surgical experience as a medical officer.
His dedication to surgery solidified while working in the trauma unit at Groote Schuur Hospital, where he was mentored by outstanding general surgeons who further inspired his career path. He successfully entered the surgical training programme at the University of Cape Town, obtaining his Fellowship of the College of Surgeons (FCS SA) in 2020 and his Master of Medicine (MMed) in General Surgery in 2021.
Dr Chilton has worked as a consultant general surgeon at both Groote Schuur Hospital and Worcester Provincial Hospital. In 2022, he joined an established surgical practice at Mediclinic Cape Town, where he gained valuable experience in private practice before launching his independent surgical practice within the same hospital. He remains passionate about general surgery and is committed to providing his patients with the highest standard of surgical care.
His surgical expertise includes laparoscopic abdominal surgery (such as gallbladder and bowel surgery), hernia surgery, endoscopy (gastroscopy and colonoscopy), and endoscopic interventions. He also has a special interest in breast, soft tissue, and endocrine surgery.
Outside of his professional life, Dr Chilton is dedicated to his family. He met his wife while specialising in surgery, and they now have a young daughter and a newborn son. He enjoys spending his free time with his family, as well as being outdoors, hiking, and mountain biking. He has completed two Cape Epic mountain bike races and an Ironman 70.3 triathlon.
